The reason LEDs are polarized and what you need to know

Polarized LED Lights

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode and is a solid-state semiconductor that is made up of different elements that fluoresce. Different levels and combinations of fluoresce, illuminate and result in various different colors. This is why different LED Rope Light colors are priced differently. Polarity refers to the direction in which the current flows. A diode in particular, is a semiconductor that allows current to pass in only one direction. Therefore, if you were to try to pass current through a diode in the opposite direction, the flow of electricity will be halted.

All home outlets are polarized as directed by the current electrical codes. You might have noticed that polarized cords have one prong that is larger than the other is. This prevents users from plugging in an electrical device using the wrong polarity. To get a better idea of things, try visualizing a standard car battery that consists of a positive and negative terminal. The current flows from the positive terminal to the negative terminal. Therefore, in order for the car to function properly, users need to plug in the positive end of your battery cable to the positive terminal and the negative end of the cable to the negative terminal. If you mix things up, then you bring about a reversed polarity that would not only ruin your battery but other electrical components as well.

Fortunately, when it comes to LEDs, the diode prevents electricity from passing in the opposite direction. In addition, unlike other electrical devices, LED Rope Lights will not sustain any damage even if you use a reverse polarity. In fact, they will simply not light up. If this is the case, you can reverse your LED Rope Light power cable by rotating 180 degrees or you can reattach the cable at the opposite side.

Rope Lighting is not just a beautiful way to decorate your house, garden or any other space, it is also both environmentally friendly and relatively cheap.

Rope Lighting is becoming very popular because it has several advantages over traditional outdoor lighting and decor.

Color & decor: Rope Lights are available in multiple colors, patterns and wavelengths. The LED bulbs and even the tubes can be manufactured in different colors. This means Rope Lights can perfectly blend or contrast with virtually any environment.

Durability: Rope Lights usually come in a PVC resin tube, which does not normally burn or singe. Furthermore, Rope Lights are nearly waterproof. The bulbs themselves have an average lifespan of 25,000 lighting hours. All this makes Rope Lighting a long-term decorating option and a worthy investment.

Flexibility: The tubes themselves can be bent into a desirable shape. This is perfect for both indoor and outdoor lighting.

Environmentally friendly: Because of the low power requirements and long lifespan amongst other things, Rope Lighting is a very environmentally friendly option. In addition, no permanent changes have to be made to install Rope Lights. Installing and dismantling a Rope Light is both easy and safe. Recent developments include solar powered Rope Lights.

Due to the wide variety of choice associated with Rope Lights, users have access to almost limitless customization. At the end of the day, you can choose from numerous options with regards to color, type, pattern, length, etc. Before you go ahead and purchase a Rope Light, make a note of the environment it will be installed in. This is important because you will have to decide if the Rope Light will be used to blend, enhance or contrast with the environment.   Another great advantage is that when a Rope Light is switched off, it does not stand out. This means you can simply keep it switched off when not needed, instead of removing it entirely when you are done.

Rope lights go solar

Solar Rope Lights

Solar power is a limitless source of energy and LED Rope Lights are one of the most efficient lighting options available. Now with the right tools you can configure your LED Rope Lights to run on solar power.

LEDs require very little power and have an average lifespan of 100,000 lighting hours as opposed to incandescent Rope Lights which are rated up to 35,000 hours. In addition, they are very environmentally friendly, unlike incandescent bulbs. Let us not forget color; there is an almost limitless range of LED bulbs to choose from, including red, green, blue and pink.  Another obvious advantage is the durability of LED Rope Lights. They are not prone to breaking or malfunctioning easily.

To set up a solar a powered Rope Lights, you will need some basic equipment. Most importantly, you will need a solar panel and charger (depending on the size, and type of your LED Rope Light). In addition, you would need some rubber cement, a soldering iron, 2% silver solder, and a pair of successors.

Once you have everything in place:

  1. Install the solar charger in an area where it will have good access to direct sunlight.
  2. Cut the plug at the end of the Rope Light and strip the edges of the wires.
  3. Wrap and solder the red (positive) wire around the positive lead found on the solar charger. Repeat the process for the black (negative) wire.
  4. Once the soldered terminals have dried , apply a thin coating of rubber cement
  5. Next, simply expose the charger to direct sunlight and give it a few minutes to generate the necessary power for your LED Rope Light.

Remember that while solar power is an attractive option, it is probably best if you have a back up source of power available, depending on how you plan to use the LED Rope Light. While it would be a great option for entertainment or decorations, if you were using a Rope Light for a more important purpose (illuminating a path or a hidden staircase) then it would be best to have some backup power as well.

How to Make a Rope Light Game Room

Rope Light Accent Game Room
If you have a game room, or even just an extra room, in your house you can use Rope Lights to make a uniquely themed area that is perfect for parties or just for hanging out with your friends. You can use Rope Lights to outline the edges of the room, and you can also hang them around the window and door frames in the room. If you have a bar in your game room, you can also outline it with Rope Lights. Rope Lights come in a number of different colors, so that you can choose your favorite color or your favorite combination of colors. Some of the Rope Lights are chasers, which means that the lights chase each other down the line. The next time you have a party, you can light up the whole room.

In a game room, you can also decorate your television by putting Rope Lights around it, and you can also decorate things like a dart board in the same way. In order to mount Rope Lights on walls, you have to have some sort of mounting clips. These are inexpensive and easy to buy. You will need one clip for about every foot of lights so that you can hold up the rope without it sagging. If you need to cut the lights to fit a certain area, you can cut them at certain intervals. The Rope Lights won’t work if you cut them in the wrong spot.

If you have an open wall, you can create a picture or design with the Rope Lights, though you need to remember that Rope Lights cannot make sharp turns. If you bend them so much that the plastic kinks, it can cause the lights to stop working. However, they can be bent to almost 180 degrees if you allow for a small loop at the turn, instead of a sharp bend.

If you don’t want to use the lights all the time, you can simply unplug them from the wall, but when you’re ready for a great party space, all you have to do is plug them back in.

What to look out for when choosing outdoor rope lights

Rope light on Railing

When it comes to outdoor Rope Lighting, the numerous options available can easily overwhelm you. Rope Lights can be categorized in a number of different ways including diameter, voltage and bulb type. However, if you have a basic knowledge of Rope Lights and a firm grasp of how and where you plan to use them, then it will not be a problem to narrow things down.

  • Diameter: The most common sizes for outdoor Rope Lights are 3/8 inch, 1/2 inch and 5/8 inch. While the lights are identical inside, the durability of the outer cover varies. The trade-off is between size and flexibility. In this case, the larger sizes will be great if there is chance that people will frequently come into contact with the lights. Therefore, it would be best to use larger diameter Rope Lights to highlight stairs, outdoor paths, deck railings, etc. The smaller diameter lights are more flexible and a better option if you want to wrap the lights around a tree or a pole, or even spell something out.
  • Voltage: Generally speaking, Rope Lights come in either 12 volt or 120 volt models. The 12-volt model can run on batteries or solar power. You can also use a transformer to plug it into a regular power outlet. While the 12 volt is great for places without access to regular power, it can only be used for short runs of around 20 feet. The 120-volt model does not require batteries or transformers and can be used for longer runs but you need to use an extension cord, which would be a hassle if you do not have a regular power outlet close by.
  • Bulb Type: There are two types of bulbs available: the traditional incandescent bulb and the LED. Incandescent bulbs are going out of style because unlike LEDs, they use more power, are more delicate and prone to breaking, and they shorten the life of the Rope Light.  In addition, since they generate a lot of heat, coming into contact with them could result in injury. Therefore, LED bulbs are best option with regards to Rope Lights.
